2/3/4/J/W Eastway
An early break led by Robert Whenman (Corridori), Daniel Rudd (Edwardes) & Matt Seaton (VC Londres) was soon snuffed out after the they were joined by others & the zest went out of it.

The next big move was undertaken by Phil Hetrel (Ipswich BC) who rode alone at about 30s seconds for lap after lap until he was drawn back in.

With the race together & the speed increasing seven riders went away; from this group Rudd attacked and took the win on the line just ahead of Chris Bartlett (Angliasport RT).

Road Racing Summary:

David Warwick and Philip Hetzel made the trip up to Peterborough for the Fenland Clarion road race for 123 Cats but both failed to finish. A crash early on saw the bunch split with David and Philip in the wrong group. Philip managed to bridge the gap only to be caught out by a second crash, though this time he gave in to Early season illnesses & carried on for a few 'training miles'. Ex-IBC rider Chris Bartlett finished 9th.

David was in action the following week for the Jock Wadley Memorial, an Elite race over 140km. Hard from the outset, David completed 4 laps before calling it a day.

Having missed the Jock Wadley RR through another bout of illness Philip was in action for the Ed Taylor Memorial RR. Three riders attacked just outside the neutralised zone and half mile later Philip tried to join them with a Glendene junior. After 2 laps of chasing Philip got dropped by his companion on the climb, but managed to recapture him by the end of the lap. Shortly after they were caught by a group of 4 then a group of 6, then the remnants of the bunch. Over the final couple of laps a few riders broke away in one's and two's but no-one caught the initial break. The race was won by first year junior Alex Dowsett (Glendene) with Philip finishing in the bunch.

Road & Track Results & Reports 04

National Masters Track Championships June 2004

Points race: A good start saw both David James and Philip Hetzel getting in a break with Paul Mill, Simon Cope & Derek Smith. Paul and Simon jumped for a sprint as Philip finished a turn, Dave went with them but Derek didn't go through. This left Philip 20m behind & not wanting to tow the other guy back to the leaders he soon got caught by the bunch. Dave's group gained a lap at which point Philip attacked, staying clear for 6 laps. Result: 1st Simon, 2nd Paul, 3rd Dave, 4th Philip.

Persuit 3k: No tactics required for the persuit, just an enormous dependence on kit! So with Pete Wheelen’s classic Graham Buck frame, Sarah's bars, Jim's Rwheel, Adrian's (WSW) sprocket & spacer & extra couple of chain links, Barry's (WSW) Fwheel and his own pedals, Philip had his first specialist TT machine. Riding it for the first time when the start gun fired he soon settled down after an uneasy first lap to finish in 3:51 and take the lead. Dave was next to go recording a time of 4:00 followed by Paul Mill in 3:48 and Greg Sandy in 3:47. With only the Gold and Silver places having a ride off Philip took the Bronze without further effort.

Scratch: This was a very fast race. Philip got away with Paul Mill & Greg Sandy but couldn't spin the gear fast enough to keep up with their counter attacks when they were caught. Paul and Greg got away and the 7 (I think) that remained kept together for the rest of the race. Philip had a couple of laps away when Dave let him drift off the front, but he didn't pick up on the signal to do the same for Dave. Philip tried leading Dave out for the final lap and a half but ended up just towing everyone round. So one of us should have got bronze, but neither did - time to refine our tactics I think!

Sunday 18 July Eastern Shaftsbury CC Road Race 1.2.3.4.W.J 133Km

With 9 Glendene riders on the start line including Area Championship bronze medallist Matthew Talbot, nothing was going to work without their involvement. A few early attacks went but never seemed to want to get away. After 2.5 laps a group of 6 riders drifted off the front with no interest coming from the bunch. Seeing this as a good opportunity Philip moved to then off the front and, joined by 5 others, soon caught the break. The 12 worked well for another lap before their rhythm was disturbed passing parked cars through a village. With no one coming through 2 riders drifted off the front. Another jumped to join them shortly followed by Matthew, Edward, and Philip. This working group of 6, including 3 Glendene riders, built a good lead over the next lap and a half before Matthew rode hard up the hill dropping everyone but Philip. Working well together they built a lead of just over a minute before reaching the climb for the final time. Matthew again pushed hard and managed to drop Philip for a solo ride to victory. Philip managed to hold on to 2nd with Edward leaving his group to take 3rd. Adrian Pettit found the distance a bit excessive and packed with one lap to go.

Saturday 24 July Eastern Eastway 12
A field of 20 riders were soon broken up when Philip attacked as soon as the race started and continued attacking until a group of 5 went clear.
With one rider unable to sustain the pace the four worked steadily together until Philip started attacked up the hill with 7 laps remaining.
Unable to shake the others with continued attacks it was the Posh Bikes rider who got away with a counter attack with 3 to go.
With the lap counters cocking up the lap board this turned into 2 laps, killing any chase down, and Philip won the sprint for 2nd.

Bungay Crits 3rd May  E123

Rain greated a national standard entry to what could be the last running of the Bungay Crits. Former National Criterium Champion, Dean Downing, won from his 4 breakaway partners who lapped the rest of the field. Philip Hetzel packed having been lapped early on. The 3/4th Cat race  stayed together where Carl Thompson took 4th, Adrian Pettit 6th and Dan Zagni 11th in the sprint. Tim Snook had a fantastic ride in a group of three to take the prize for 2nd 4th cat.

Beccles RR  23rd May 1234 108Km

A fast edition, held in warm and sunny conditions over three 22.5-mile laps of a course linking Beccles, Bungay and Halesworth in north Suffolk . First break of the day was by Geoff Frost (API) who was quickly joined by Philip Hetzel. They survived to the start of the second lap when Phil attacked again, and again… and again. All this to no avail since each break was pulled back. In the final 5 miles a group of 5 attempted to escape but were pulled back by Phil and Chaz Hollisi ( Gemini BC ) where upon Dave Staff  (Anglia Velo) got away with Glenn Stanford (ERV). These two survived with Dave taking the sprint just ahead of the bunch lead by ERV’s Sean Sumner with Dan Zagni 10th.

Result:
1. David Staff Anglia Velo, 68 miles in 2-43:00
2. Glenn Stanford Eastern Region Velo, s.t.
3. Sean Sumner Eastern Region Velo, at 4 seconds
10. Daniel Zagni Ipswich BC, all at s.t.

Eastern Area Champs 30th May E123 140km

A quality field of 80 entrants saw 4 IBC riders start 10 laps of a tough circuit just outside Newmarket . The first climb of the day saw Dan Zagni unship his chain and following a 4 lap chase, he called it a day. David Warwick also had an early exit after struggling with a hamstring injury. On the 2nd of 10 laps Philip Hetzel was one of 20 riders to move clear of the bunch and with all the main contenders present they were unlikely to be caught. They soon gained a 3 minute advantage and had no real threats once an early chasing group gave up. Phil punctured on lap 4 but managed to get a wheel change and was soon back in the break, albeit with a limited number of working gears. By lap 8 the break had split with 3 leaders a group of 6, Phil’s group of 3 followed by the remnants of the break ahead of the disintegrating bunch. Phil’s group caught the 6 ahead on the final lap but the 3 leaders were well away to contest the finish with Richard Whitehorn (Glendene) taking the win from Richard Wilkinson (Anglia Sport). Phil attacked with 1km to go  but was passed by most of the break to finish 10th when he failed to find a working gear for the final climb. John Hobson did well to finish with the bunch.

42e Omloop der Peel 5-6 June (Someren, Holland )

Stage 1: 7km Prologue – A flat course with 8 right angle corners along narrow roads with sections of block work had each rider lead by a motorbike which set the professional tone of the whole event. Although this was the lowest level of Dutch racing, the standard was high with ex-pro and Tour de France rider (1995&6) Robert Koppers only managing 2nd with last years winner Marco Vermeij taking an early lead. Philip Hetzel finished 29th, 33secs down on the leader.

Stage 2: 111km – 54km loop through the towns and countryside 20 miles from Einhoven followed by 8 laps of 7km through Someren. With the police getting all traffic off the road we had all the fun of dodging traffic Islands, speed ramps and roundabouts in true TDF style. Philip got in a break at the 35k mark but this was quickly caught. The race stayed together until the first of 8 7km finishing circuits where 13 moved clear. With 2 laps to go Philip moved to the front and with continued hard riding managed to move clear with 2 others on the final lap. At the finish Philip took 15th gaining 10secs on the bunch but loosing 30secs to the leaders.

Stage 3: 111km – Again 1 big loop followed by 3x16km loops. With the leaders consolidating their prologue times in the first stage the main teams were never going to let a break stay away. Despite a number of attacks, all was together on the last lap as Philip moved to the front before it turned onto the windy section with 1.5km to go. A crash on the final corner and the continued high pace at the front opened a gap which  Philip was just the right side of as he took 11th in the sprint (20th GC) behind winner of stage and race Robert Koppers.

Ron Gray Electric Light Show RR 20th June 2.3.4 95Km

David Warwick and Philip Hetzel made the trip down to Whitwell (Herts) for what turned out to be a slow and negative race.  Philip went for primes on laps 2,3 & 4, unfortunately the judges thought these should be awarded at the start rather than the more traditional end of lap, so he only got 2 of the three. A few attacks were launched and pulled back so all was together on the last lap. With 3 miles to go Philip jumped to join 2 others but into the final km only Philip survived. Two riders flew from the pack and straight past him just before the finishing climb leaving him to claim 3rd with the bunch coming in 5secs later. David was involved in a pile up on the hill with 1km to go but escaped major injury to body or bike.

Ixworth Crits 27th June

34J 30mins + 5 laps: With Tim Coen (VCB) making a break for it on the first lap this was a race that was going to split early.

As soon as Tim was caught 4 riders went clear with a determination that made anyone thinking of the win bridge the gap to join them.

This led to a break of 8 with Dan Zagni just unable to get across, watching as the gap increased with each lap.

As the chasers regrouped, Dan was joined by Adrian Pettit but they were unable to make any impression on the leaders.

As the lead group splintered in the closing stages it was Kristian Downs took the sprint from Ben Paton.

Rob Smith and Mike Carr had a tough ride in a group at the back of the race but both enjoyed the experience.

E12 35mins + 5 laps: A field of 8 riders lined up for the start but the high initial pace soon whittled them down to 5.

With the remaining riders all capable of holding a wheel the pace dropped and only Philip’s attack,

which survived 2 laps and won him a prime, making any headway. So with all together Philip led over the last couple of laps,

watching for any attacks and waiting for the fight to lead into the final corner.

Gary took the lead on the penultimate corner with Simon close on his wheel.

Philip jumped straight onto Simon’s wheel but could not out sprint Gary or Simon out of the final corner to the line.
