ICA – additional Hill climbs – too late this year for the first two, but ICA have agreed to add on the last two at the end of the season. Venue still Washbrook Hill – 1.7mile sprint.  Suggestion of a pre-selected numbering system at ICA this year - discussed.  Still no definite news of when last year’s ICA trophies will be presented.  Still no news of the when an ICA meeting will be held.

Two Forests Rough Stuff – club used to organised a Sunday morning (semi-off road) run.  Some people would do all, some just the off road.  Proposal from John to organise some more of these.  Sun 28th May to be the first. Leave Ipswich 08:00.  Free entry – guests encouraged. 25mile of tarmac, 25mile dirt. Further details to   follow.

Best wishes from the committee to Tonya after her bad accident.  She has returned her thanks to all well-wishers.

IBC Reliability Ride

 26 Feb 2006

Thanks to Kirsty McLaughlin for organising another successful Reliability ride.  There was no repeat of the awful weather that forced last year's ride to be cancelled, though those    setting off at 9.30 did ride straight into a brief snow shower.  The weather improved throughout the morning and a strong wind meant that riders made the most of being in packs.

Thanks also  to Jo Newstead, Angela Parker and their respective families for running the catering efficiently and putting on a magnificent spread.  They donated a huge number of delicious cakes and were baking for several days  beforehand to ensure that cold riders could refuel.

Your Chairman can report that a winter of cyclo cross does nothing for one's endurance - he was dropped by his group in Campsey Ash :-(

Some of the Trophy winners L-R (back),

Angus Jardine, Vice president Marie Pickess who presented the trophies,

Tim Butler, Dave Copland, Hannah Robinson, Ted Saunderson,

(front) Ben Caisey, Colin Newstead,  Tonya Antonis, Jim Morris.

Thanks also to the team for  organising the Club Trophy presentation. A very successful evening. Looks as though Tim’s hustler title has been    transferred to Jeff Irving after he soundly beat him at snooker.

Just a reminder to members that new points allocation for helping  is now active. For the first marshalling duty or other means of helping at an IBC promotion you will receive 5 points, with subsequent duties being a warded a single point. For coaching and time keeping duties are allocated 2 points per event, while organising has a 6 point award.

All points awarded can be used to reduce club membership, thus effectively membership has only gone up by £2.50 if you help

VC Baracchi Cross Report

The Youth race was an absolute scorcher. Carl Harris took  the lead over Matthew Cook and Dominic Schils. Carl however didn't like the deep sand  and Matty caught Carl when he punctured and stuck to him in a thrilling final sprint. Age and strength won the day, giving CArl the vistory, but that takes nothing from the excellent effort by Matty in his first year in the youth category.

Will Meadows(IBC) was neck and neck with Luke Newby(Diss CC) for the first few laps but then suffered from various mechanical difficulties. He then spent a fair proportion of the race with the bike on his shoulder. Will gets the Fair Play award – he was offered help to fix his bike, but declined to accept as he was not in the pits. It might not help the league points, but it certainly wins respect from the whole cyclo-cross community.

The Under 12’s was business as usual. Hugo Robinson(IBC) took an early lead and gradually increased it over the course of the race, finishing a lap ahead of the rest of the field. Frazer Wood(Angliasport) came in a strong second and Lewis Parker(IBC) held off Jack Hardwicke(Plomesgate) for third place. Jenny Hardwicke(Plomesgate) and James Arden(NABC) battled the full race duration. Jenny gave it her all to take the sprint.

The Seniors gave maximum effort in the battle to be the first winner’s name on the Joe Waller Memorial Cup. The first four laps were led by a group of four: Carls Davey(API) and Thompson(XRT), Shaun Aldous (Interbike) and Nick Ainsworth(Fat Birds Tri). In lap five Carl Davey started to pull away. Thommo managed to keep Carl D in his sights for the rest of the race. A bravura performance from Carl Davey who now tops the league, and a commendable second place for Thommo. Shaun and Nick were left to fight for third place – not a familiar experience for Shaun who is used to the top spot. Shaun made do with third. It’s good to see Nick back in form; fourth is his best placing this season.

The leading Vet and Junior were well up with the Seniors – Mark Farrow (VC Norwich) was flying round like a mad thing to take first Vet and sixth place overall, beating Senior rider Ian Newby(Diss CC). It has since been discovered that Mark has been experimenting with Dave Copland’s(IBC) secret training technique – rhubarb crumble and custard the night before racing. Dave’s chef could be in serious trouble for divulging such closely guarded information. However, said chef points out that any retribution from Dave, and it’s no more crumbles. Dave held off Julian Parker(IBC) to be second Vet. Shaun Hurrell(Maldon & Dist) was the first Junior home in ninth place overall – a whole lap ahead of Peter Hargreaves(VC Norwich) and Daniel Parker(IBC).

The big surprise of the Vet’s race was Chris Gooch(Team Clean). This could be the first time this season that Goochie was pleased with his racing. There was no moaning at all.

Ben Caisey on Tour

In July I had an excellent cycle holiday in France. I incorporated a couple of stages of Le Tour (Le Puy & St Etienne) for good measure. It was a certain Mr Armstrong’s last and the experience and atmosphere was superb. The tour is such a big spectacle in France with great support and enthusiasm. I thought on my return home I should support our own British tour, this year it was from Glasgow to London over six day stages, August 30th to September 4th

I booked a couple of days off work, got a map and sketched out a route. About a week before I set off I discovered I had won a competition in cycling plus magazine (look out for me in November issue) to go to the Birmingham 4k TT Stage on Saturday 3” September as a VIP and also a jersey. (I’ve now received the Jersey, signed by this year’s winner, Nick Nuyens). I was delighted, to say the least. I wondered if I could make           Birmingham on my bike I thought as I set off fully loaded with all my camping gear etc. The weather was great, a little hot if anything and I covered about 92 miles in the first day. I ended up camping at a pub at Southwick, a little south of Rutland Water. I had a nice meal and a drink to help me sleep!

The next day the tour ended in Nottingham and I wanted to see a hilly bit. I headed for Ab Kettleby Near Melton Mowbray, a category three climb, with a pub A great place to view the tour as they go by and stock upon food intake.

(I don’t think you can eat enough when touring and I have hollow legs and feet !).

It was a great atmosphere and even the local school turned out with flags flying and cheering everything that came past. Four guys came past first including a Scott about 17 mins ahead of the peleton. When the riders had gone by I  peddled off again, now with Birmingham in my sights. I managed to get to a    campsite just north of  Birmingham. A water park called Kingsbury just as it was getting dark. I cooked up my veggies on the little stove and got to sleep. I had done about 74 miles and knew I had to be up early to get into Birmingham city centre for 10am, I was dreading  getting there. I tried to avoid traffic as city centres are not my favourite places to cycle. Next morning I was up at 6am and greeted by a cold misty morning. I decamped and peddled for Birmingham The route I had sketched on the  ordnance survey worked great and in no time I was in the centre of  Birmingham.

I was greeted and asked to put on a VIP ribbon. It was a great day. Lovely food, good TT races and pictures of me with the T Mobile girls. There was a thrilling climax to the day as last men off and race leader Nick Nuyens had to go sub 5 minutes to retain his yellow jersey. He stormed over the finish line well under with the best time of the day. I was now off again, this time heading east and home. I got to North Kilmore, just south of   Leicester as it was getting dark. I couldn’t find any camp site but luckily a friendly pub owner let me camp in the garden. Only 60 miles today but only a half days riding.

I woke upon the Sunday, knowing I had to be home for work next day and I had a long way to go. The scenery was lovely. Rolling hills and forest. I got to the fens it was flat and the ever present wind was wearing. I eventually got to Bury St Edmunds as it was dark. I flicked on my dynamo and followed the little beam home. I must admit when I eventually got there I felt absolutely shattered, well, I had been on the saddle about 11 hours and covered about 130 miles. Well worth it though and another great trip

If anyone has the Tour of Britain on tape and they can let me borrow it I would really appreciate it. I forgot all about it as I was taking part in my first cyclo cross event at Sible Hedingham.

Mobile 07762 095674 Cheers. Ben Caisey.

Cross Talk

We welcome back Nathan Miller to club (again!) as not only our leading cross senior but as a qualified coach as well.

He has however been only racing at selected events due to other commitments, but when he has been riding he has consistently been in the  top three. His season didn’t start until 6th November, at Eccles and but he came away with 3rd– then improved with a 2nd at Redgrave, Foxhall and last weekend at Eastway.

Hugo Robinson has the Under12’s title sewn up with 100% recorded for the required minimum of eight events. He has helped considerably to the team results, so much, that the IBC has also already been awarded the Team Title, also with 100% record of wins.

Dave Copland (left) looks as though he is heading for the silver position in the Vets League, with Mark Farrow retaining his title .

It has certainly been IBC versus the rest as we have had so many members riding the we have been as much as 20% of the total numbers riding! The most being at    Nowton Park where we had 25 club members taking part. This has to a record for Eastern Cross.

December 05

A new committee has been voted in at the recent AGM held at Gainsborough Sports Centre on 8th of November

The committee is basically the same, but we now have a new Chairperson in Dave Copland, taking over the reigns from Tim Butler who wanted to stand down.

This left a gap in the Club Reps and we welcome two new faces to the committee with long term member Rob Smith and newly qualified coach  Kieron Robinson adding to the vast experience held within the committee.

Prior to Tim leaving the Chair position he proposed a new committee position in the shape of a Coaching Secretary, who’s job will be to  co-ordinate coaching within the club and keep up-to-date with British Cycling’s  requirements.

The club voted in  Jo Newstead to take on this role, as she has been very active in coaching youngsters together with Nathan Miller at Foxhall Stadium most Saturday mornings.

While on the subject of  coaching, if you can spare a Saturday morning  occasionally to assist Jo,  Keiron and Nathan I am sure you will be welcomed with open arms. Contact Jo on 01473-216388.

Prior to the meeting we had a presentation from British Cycling’s Regional Development Officer for the Eastern Region. He explained the changes in British Cycling coaching structure, with the appointment of Mark Wyer to oversee Coaching  in the area, and also to identify up and coming talented riders for the inclusion of a regional Talent Team.

John and Mark will be  attending the first committee meeting on the 12th of December to hopefully complete the IBC’s application to be accredited to the Sport England’s Club Mark scheme.

The first meeting of the new committee will be on the 12th December at 7:30 for 8pm start.

Also another meeting that had a lot of club representation was the inaugural    meeting of Team Ipswich Cycling  to which other   cycling  disciplines other than the IBC were invited, such as BMX Cycle Speedway, Disabled Goup, Bikeability etc. The idea is for all cycling clubs in the Ipswich area to come under a new affiliated club so that members of different clubs can try out different aspects of the sport, without having to actually join a club to try that particular discipline out. (such as a BMX rider wanting to try time-trialing– at the moment that rider would have to join a CTT registered club.

Also hopefully this will open doors to funding for such  projects as the Ravenswood cycle circuit , as we would have a higher    membership base to be able to bargain with as all cycle club members would automatically be a member of Team Ipswich Cycling, but leaving the original clubs with their own identity intact.

The next meeting will be on the 14th December at Gainsborough Sports Centre Maryon Rd.,   Ipswich at 7pm

Hannah Robinson is currently doing very well in the Under 14’s National Trophy rankings with ninth position and seventh overall in the Under 16’s girls league.

In the Eastern Cross League she is currently in sixth youth rider overall, fourth Under 14 and first Youth Girl

Well done!

Cross News

The IBC is currently taking over the league, with the Team on a 100% record at the time of writing.

In the categories we are  fairing reasonable well. Under 12’s has Hugo Robinson   unbeaten this year, while in the youth’s (under 16’s) Will Meadows is creeping up the league as his confidence grows in his first cross season, currently in 4th position, while Hannah  Robinson, as mentioned   earlier, is in 6th.

In the Seniors we welcome back Nathan Miller, who although commuting to and from Manchester on a regular basis is still putting in some good results, recently 2nd at Redgrave. Although his league position is low (17th)due the number of events he has completed, his average score would put him in the top three.

In the Juniors (16-18) there is a wealth of talent in opposition to Daniel Parker, with two talent team members scoring highly,, however Dan is holding them off in second position at the moment.

The Vets is a case of IBC versus the rest, with no few than twelve riders from the club and they currently have 2nd to 6th position tied up.

Dave Copland is in 2nd just behind Mark Farrow (VC Norwich), though on last Saturdays showing       hopefully it won’t be for long as Dave wopped Mark by a minute.

Closely following DC is JT (John Terrell) and then JP(Julian Parker), followed by TK (Tim Knights) and RS(Rob Smith)

Sadly I am currently out injured again so have slipped out of third down to 21st having missed three events.

Interest switches to our local course this weekend with the XRT promotion at   Foxhall. 2nd Claim Member Carl Thompson is the     organiser and this is his first event he has been at the business end. He has asked for help from the club as XRT only have three     members, and I am sure that there will be many willing volunteers at the course on Saturday afternoon to help lay out the circuit. I will be up there by 1:30pm to start the (tape) ball rolling. If you are able to help either    contact me on 01473-414546 or Carl on 01473-272414–

email carl@xrt-uk.com

The race is also part of the national Scott league, so hopefully we should see some top class racing on Sunday.

November 05

Thorndon Cross was a great success and a nail biting   senior race.

The course was a lot less bumpy than in past years I was glad to note, and I came away exhausted but no aches or pains, thanks must go to Judith Gunion who has been treating my back very      successfully this summer, enabling me to get back to racing.

Impressive IBC turnout as well—a total of 21 club members racing on the day– a fifth of the membership, must be  record in one event.

I didn’t have lot of time to watch the youth or U12’s, but I was most impressed with Alwyn Newstead’s growl and contorted face as he crossed the line.

The event at Nowton Park showed a complete contrast on the organisational level, with only 3 members of the promoting club putting the course out.

Also severe lack of marshals and helpers in  general and poorly designed course, which the Commissaire and few IBC members had to correct due, to safety issues, prior the start of the event.

A very frantic day for yours truly, which didn’t help with my computer going on the blink as well. Still a work colleague managed to get some cracking pictures of the day’s racing.

The racing was certainly fast and furious with many close battles going on.

The list of club riders exceeded Thorndon, with 25  competing.   The club is going from strength to strength. Long may it continue.

We also had a few comments about members doing team time trial practice while racing– at one point there was four IBC jerseys in a  procession.

Above The stress of the day is  certainly showing at the end– and I do this for FUN!!!

Letter from our President- Herbie Nevill

I would just like to congratulate Tonya on her wonderful 12 hour ride recently.

I think it was just after beating the old IBC  Ladies record by such a large margin.

I well remember Connie Herbert riding that 12hr all the years ago.

We all though then it was a wonderful performance.

Having ridden in several 12’s myself in the past years, on both solo and trike, I know what it is like, trundling around for 12 hours, trying to keep to a schedule.

Hard work, but I always enjoyed it and rides like that does help to keep you fit.

It didn’t due me much harm as I am soon coming up to 90 (years  young- Ed).

I enjoy reading the IBC  newsletter as it does keep us all in touch with the members and events.

Congratulations and may it continue for a long time.

All the best for now,

Yours sincerely

Herbie Nevill

CROSS TALK

The ‘Old Man’ is back on his bike (and suffering as well by the look of it) but no back ache :-)

Brickwall Farm Cross at Sible Hendinham was opening event of the 2005-06 Cross season. The IBC has two first timer and plenty of Old Timers

Tim Knights (2nd left) & Ben Caisey (right) were given a baptism of fast descents and struggling climbs at the undulating course and technical course made additionally so by the preceding days rain. Also pictured Dave Copland (left) and 'The Old Man', Tim Butler (3rd from left).

Race report for the main event taken from the Eastern Cross Web site - http://easterncross.users.btopenworld.com/

There were a myriad of sub-races in the main race: there was the sharp end, the juniors, the ladies, the fast vets, the under 12's dads, the reliable vets and the scorers. Keeping up with 77 riders for 10 laps was a baptism of fire for the start of the season - phew! The judges were impressed that all the riders appreciated the uphill finish. So here goes...

Carl Davey led the way with Shaun Aldous in hot pursuit. Shaun didn't have the oomph to stay up there with the leader, and eventually had to settle for 3rd place when Carl Thompson snuck past on lap 8 and managed to hold on until the bitter end. Mick Bell put in his usual class  performance to come in 4th overall and 1st vet - a lap ahead of the rest of his    category. I bet the Eastern League vets are pleased he's just visiting from London. Sorry Mick, no league points for you.

As for the other vet places, Mark Farrow screeched to a halt in front of the line as he realised that Carl Davey was a second behind him and about to take the win. Carl's bike skills shone through as he narrowly avoided crashing into Mark. That could have been a costly start to the    season, all for avoiding a final lap. In the Best of the Rest vets Julian Parker and Craig Stevens zoomed ahead of the chasing group: Dave Copland, Geoff Bores and Donald MacGregor. Dave thought he was having a bad day at the office,    recovering from 2nd place overall at the Clacton   Off-Road Triathlon the day before. But then Julian and Craig paid for their early zeal. And in the final lap burnt-out Julian let Dave pass, mistaking the IBC kit for his son Daniel. What a nice Daddy. We all know that Dave doesn't look his age, but he can always get served in a bar.

THANK YOU for the help received over the last couple of weekends, at  the Thorndon Cross. I was amazed at the numbers of helpers that turned up to clear the course—13 It made the job so much more enjoyable, despite it being hard work and it was all cleared within three hours . The same went for the following weekend—setup only took two hours and on the race day we were all cleared up and loaded for home by 4pm. WHAT A TEAM! Thanks again, your so   professional and  it was a joy to be the organiser as it certainly makes my job so much easier. While I think of it we are currently looking for a new course within 10 mile radius of Ipswich, with facilities with in the venue or no more than a half mile away. If you know of any  possibilities please let me know on the usual contact details. Tim Butler

ECCA 12HR - more records broken Jeff Irving

Not content with Ironman Germany, Tonya wondered what to do with the rest of her season, and what to do with all that strength endurance training. “I know” I said jokingly “why don’t you do the ECCA 12 hour”?

“Ok then!” Me and my big mouth – another military operation was about to swing into action, because believe it or not riding a 12 hour time trial to a schedule is more complicated than you think.

The Eastern Counties  Cycling Association were promoting this event which was based at Great Chesterford, between Bishop Stortford and Duxford. With this as the hub, the event radiated out from there over four different circuits taking the riders north to Red Lodge, south to Royston, west to Cambridge and slightly east to Newmarket. The smaller finishing circuit was based on a triangular course from Gt Chesterford to Duxford and Gt Abington. The whole idea of this event was to cover as many miles as possible in twelve hours from your start time – yes I know it sounds crazy but like Everest was to Hilary, the ECCA 12 hour was to Tonya!

Fortunately, the weather forecast was good, but the event started only ten minutes late because it was still too dark! First man off was at 5.40am, pursued six   minutes later by Tonya who was riding to an ambitious schedule of 225 miles. That’s an average speed of 18.75 mph over 12 hours (think about that when you’re on your next  training ride)  – I did contemplate removing the inner chain ring to make sure she didn’t slacken off but we needed a bit of an insurance policy! The car was loaded with spare wheels, clean kit, wash kit, food and drink bottles, plus refreshments for the back up crew, deck chairs, OS map, stop watch, calculator, tool box – and some matchsticks to keep our eyes open during the day!
